A couple weekends ago my family and I decided what we really needed to do to make the most of the Scottish summer was hike out to a small stone hut with no running water, electricity or toilets, stay there for a night and then hike back again. So that's what we did.
Actually I make it sound a lot worse than it was. The weather was great and it's a really easy walk. You drive out from Fort William and park in a fairly unassuming layby, then head out along the path. It takes you over the railway and upwards to a view of the islands Rum, Eigg and Muck. You can sit here at the cairn of stones and know you're pretty much halfway, then continue downhill.
Doesn't it look cosy?
After a dinner cooked over a camp stove, and a few bags worth of melted marshmallows over the fire with whisky to wash it down, we went to bed. We all slept on the floor in the upstairs loft, leaving the downstairs rooms to a stag party who were also out that weekend. The next day was clearer and still cool enough to be comfortable.
poor stag party had to deal with us being silly.
Our little trooper dog!
It's a really great walk, and only a few miles each way. The location is so beautiful; well worth it.
